Meet the students who topped the 2018 GABECE

The best students in the just-released Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination (GABECE) results are from very humble backgrounds in Brikama and Latri Kunda Sabiji.

Modou B. Jallow of St Charles Upper Basic School and Sainabou L. Jaiteh of St. Peters Upper Basic School beat out more than 20,000 Grade 9 students across the country to get the best results in this year’s GABECE.

Both of them, who are now preparing to start their senior secondary education, bagged aggregate six with 1 (A) in all their core subjects.

The results were released on Monday, 27th August, by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

In a press release, the ministry revealed that the total number of candidates that entered for the examination was 20,190 students of which 9,199 were males and 10,991 were females.

Nineteen candidates emerged with aggregate six with Modou B. Jallow and Sainabou L. Jaiteh topping the list.

Born in Brikama, Sainabou is an orphan, who many described as a very hard working young woman. She is said to be committed to everything she embarks upon.

For Modou, he is the first student in his school to bag aggregate six. One of his neighbours said he is a student who always strives to do his very best.
