Government might start regulating the activities of real estate companies

A senior official at the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure has hinted that the government might start regulating the activities of real estate companies in The Gambia.

Sulayman Gaye was responding to Scotland-based Gambian, Yunus Hydara after he wrote on Facebook: “How is real estate companies regulated in The Gambia?

The senior civil servant, who is very outspoken on social media, disclosed the inadequate regulation of the real estate industry was one of the issues discussed during the recent government retreat in Tendaba, Lower River Region.

“Humans need to be held accountable for their actions or inactions, “said Gaye

However, an insider at the Judiciary told What’s On-Gambia: “It wouldn’t be easy to bring sanity in the real estate sector. A lot of people in government are going to be affected. The Ministry of Lands and Regional Government is one of the must dubious entities in the country.”

He continued: “The Department of Physical Planning, which is under them, would know a particular land transaction is fake, but would go ahead and prepare the documents after receiving money under the table. It is a network!”

In a live Facebook video that garnered more than 24,000 views, US-based Gambian comedian Sering Thiapathioly revealed so many Diaspora Gambians are losing their hard earned money to unscrupulous real estate companies.
